Secret Lives of Color

 Woad

The color woad comes naturally from a plant called the isatis tinctorial. This dye is extracted and used in numerous ways like dying fabrics and threads. This dye is also used in traditional Celtic and Viking tattoos. I chose to create a digital collage using photos of the plant the color is extracted from, an illustration of someone with woad tattoos, and what fabric using this color would look like.

Buff

The word buff originally comes from the word buffalo, this animal has a tan hide. The term itself dates back to the 16th - 17th century. European soldier's kit primarily used this color during this era. During the American Revolution the military uniforms and gear also used this color. The color was adopted by many and is a symbol of liberty. I chose to create a collage of a buffalo in front of the American flag to represent this.
